Seattle, 1934. A Saturday evening of bridge at the Greenlake home of Horace and Hattie Mendelson (Horace is facing us. Hattie with her back to us). Vernon and Glenda Carlson from Ballard are their guests. The foursome started the evening with a scrumptious supper at the Roma Cafe downtown. They were planning on going dancing afterwards but decided to forgo it, play bridge and just enjoy each other's company.
Horace: Looks like Smith is going to be our new mayor..
Vernon: I'm not all that thrilled with Smitty, but if he cleans up that blasted Hooverville and stops this pending longshoremen strike, then he most certainly has my support..
Hattie: Oh Horace, must we speak politics on such a lovely evening...
Glenda: I agree with Hattie, I much prefer gay banter. Please don't spoil it.
Horace: It looks like we're outnumbered, Vern.
Vernon: Outnumbered? But it's husbands versus wives..
Horace: Exactly.
Chuckles all around.
Horace: Would you like a drink, old man?
Vernon: Well, I never say no to a -
Glenda - Oh, Vernon never drinks while playing bridge...
Horace: No? Why is that?
Glenda: He says it interferes with his suffering.
The entire party bursts into laughter
Vernon: Guilty as charged!
